Comments: E-portfolios can give you an edge

As a Careers Adviser I believe the benefits of eportfolios to potential employers and candidates is in their ability to support the process of self-analysis and personal development, rtaher than in the product per se. The experience of using physical NRAs (Nationa Records of Achievement) with school pupils would seem to support this.

Thanks for the comment Shelagh. I agree with what you say. I feel the real value of the e-porfolio will come through the process of set-up, maintainance and reflection.

'Power in the process'.

e-portfolio systems where the main aim is the product, I feel, are missing out on the power behind the portfolio and judging by my general chats with employers most are not willing to look through e-portfolios at the moment. However, this need not matter as a learner who constructs their e-portfolio reflects and builds with it will demonstrate the process of self-analysis and personal development, which in turn will leave them better equiped to deal with the task of finding a job.
